DARREN KEMP - Managing Director
Before founding Top Hat, Darren worked for the BBC for 18 years where he was a factual commissioner. He also originated and executive produced dramas such as the Bafta and RTS winning Murdered by my Boyfriend and the Broadcast Award winning My Murder. Recently he was the executive producer on the critically acclaimed Meet The Ukippers and as a commissioner oversaw the Grierson and RTS winning drama series Our World War, the Grierson winning Our War: Goodbye Afghanistan and Inside the Commons. During his career as a film maker he has worked across current affairs, documentary, history and politics. He started his film making career in BBC Current Affairs where he specialised in investigations and films in war zones. Films he produced and directed won multiple RTS awards as well as Banff, Peabody, Foreign Press Association and Amnesty awards.
LISA Mac HALE - Head of Development
Lisa is an award-winning producer who has worked in factual TV in the UK for over twenty years. From 2014 to 2016 Lisa was Head of Development at BBC History & Business where she worked on a range of blue-chip commissions for the BBC and international broadcasters including the BBC / PBS co-production
The Vikings Uncovered (BBC ONE), which revealed astonishing new evidence of Viking settlements in North America; the BAFTA winning Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners (BBC TWO); the BBC ONE ratings smash hit Rome’s Invisible City with Alexander Armstrong and the follow up series, Italy’s Invisible Cities; access-doc Inside John Lewis at Christmas (BBC TWO) and the ambitious BBC TWO experiential history series Operation Gold Rush with Felicity Aston and Dan Snow. Passionate about digital, Lisa recently won the 2016 BIMA for Best Content for How to Survive a Nuclear Bomb, an interactive experience for 16-34 year olds which garnered more than 1 million views online. She also developed the BBC’s first 8K Virtual Reality experience to accompany Rome’s Invisible City. Previously, Lisa has Executive and Series Produced various Documentary, Specialist Factual and Popular Factual titles including Empire of the Seas (BBC TWO) and the RTS winning Breast Cancer: The Operation (BBC THREE)
EMMA WHITLOCK - Executive Producer
Emma is an award winning film maker who has worked in factual TV for over twenty years in the UK and the US. From 2006 to 2009 Emma was an Executive Producer at Discovery Networks Europe where she oversaw a successful slate of history, science and factual entertainment formats.
Since then she has worked as a freelance Series Producer and been responsible for critically acclaimed series such as ‘Genius of Britain’ with Stephen Hawking for Channel Four and 'Inside the Commons', an observational documentary for the BBC about a year in the House of Commons which has been nominated for BAFTA and Grierson awards.
